Choosing an indoor rabbit enclosure

Rabbits need far more room than most "rabbit hutches" sold in Australia give them. RSPCA Australia, following the UK Rabbit Welfare Association, recommends at least 3m × 2m of space, 1m high, for a pair of average-sized rabbits, whether indoors or out. RSPCA Victoria recommends indoor play pens at least 1m high, because rabbits are strong jumpers. That's why we focus on pens and open enclosures rather than small boxed hutches.

Our extra-tall rabbit playpen

Our 120cm Extra Tall Rabbit Playpen is made from powder-coated steel with 7 panels plus a door panel. You can set it up as a square, a rectangle or an L-shape to fit your room. At 120cm high it stops most rabbits jumping out, and it works indoors or outside under cover. It's the quickest way to give a rabbit a large, safe space.

Setting up your playpen

The panels join in any order, so you can make a large square in the middle of a room, or run it along a wall to make a long run. Put a washable mat, rug or fleece liner underneath to give your rabbit grip and protect your floors. Leave the door panel on the side you use most, so feeding and cleaning are easy.

Setting up the space

  • Flooring: avoid wire floors. Use fleece liners, rugs or mats for grip, and a litter tray filled with hay at one end.
  • Hay everywhere: rabbits should have unlimited fresh hay. Put a hay rack or hay bag right next to the litter tray, as rabbits like to eat and toilet at the same time.
  • Hiding spots: add at least one hidey or tunnel per rabbit so they can retreat when they feel unsure.
  • Enrichment: willow balls, chew toys, dig boxes and tunnels keep rabbits busy and help wear down their teeth.
  • Temperature: keep the enclosure between about 10 °C and 25 °C, out of direct sun and away from heaters.
  • Daily exercise: even in a large pen, let your rabbit out to explore a bunny-proofed room each day.

Frequently asked questions

How big should an indoor rabbit enclosure be?

RSPCA Australia recommends at least 3m × 2m and 1m high for a pair of average-sized rabbits. Smaller spaces are fine only as a sleeping base if your rabbits have a large exercise area attached.

How high should a rabbit pen be?

At least 1m, according to RSPCA Victoria. Our 120cm playpen stops most rabbits from jumping out.

Can I use the playpen outdoors?

Yes. It's powder-coated and rust-resistant. Outdoors, set it up in a shaded, sheltered spot, and only use it while you're home, as an open-top pen doesn't protect against foxes, cats or birds of prey.

What should go on the floor of a rabbit enclosure?

Soft, grippy flooring such as fleece liners or washable mats, plus a litter tray with hay. Avoid bare wire, which can hurt their feet.

Do you deliver rabbit enclosures?

The 120cm playpen is pick-up only from our Kilsyth store. Liners, hay bags, hides and toys ship Australia-wide.
